Alan Davie was a well-known abstract painter from Grangemouth, Scotland. He is commended for his unique style of artwork which helped inspire the likes of David Hockney. Both Davie’s and Hockney’s work have been compared and exhibited together many times throughout recent history, with artwork from Hockney selling for in excess of £70 million.

This year at Christie’s they have seen multiple lots from Davie sell for much over their estimates with the most recent being his 1956 piece, The Prayer which was estimated to sell for £25,000 to £35,000 before fetching an outstanding £60,480. Davie’s work has become ever more popular among collectors since his passing in 2014, with many believing there is still substantial growth to be seen. Leaving many asking, how long it could take for Davie’s work to match Hockney’s in price.
